5 Top Tips For Getting Up Early

If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly looking for ways to up your daily productivity. For me, one of the main things in setting myself up for a productive day ahead is getting up early. That can sometimes (or all of the time) be a struggle, though, so I’ve been fine-tuning ways to get myself out of bed and I think I finally came up with a reliable list. Enjoy reading, and I hope these tips are of use to you too!

1. GO TO BED ON TIME

I put this at the top of the list, because it is easily the most important one. I know it’s no one’s favourite, because everyone wants to make the most of their evening – I mean, why wouldn’t you, after having busted your ass off at work all day? But that’s not the best approach when it comes to getting out of bed early. Just trust me on this: if you want to get up early and get the most out of your day, make sure you go to bed on time so you get the right amount of sleep. If you can, also try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every single day, weekend or day off or whatever it is – pick a time, and stick to it. This way, your body will start to get used to this sleep schedule and start getting tired or waking up naturally at the appropriate times. I’m obviously not saying to never have fun again. Of course you can have the occasional (or not so occasional, depending on how wild you wanna get!) night out. But if you really want to commit to early mornings to up your productivity game, you’re going to have to make some sacrifices.

2. HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN THE MORNING

This one has been absolutely huge for me. I used to get up early with a long to-do list already in the back of my mind, and an unwillingness to get started on it. A lot of the things I wanted to get done once I got out of bed felt like chores, and how can that ever motivate you to actually get up? You’re right, it can’t. It might give you a little push the first couple of days, but soon you’ll find yourself hitting that snooze button more often to procrastinate on the things you need to get done but don’t really feel like doing first thing. A while ago, I actually sat down to write a list of all the things I would enjoy doing in the morning. Obviously you’re going to figure out what your motivators are, but I’m going to share my list with you just to give you an example of what you’re looking for.

Getting up early every day, will give me time to:

  • read a chapter (or two) in my current book
  • have a more extensive, healthy breakfast
  • enjoy a nice cup of tea
  • watch an episode of my current favourite TV show
  • watch a few YouTube videos
  • do my full skincare routine

I know it may not seem like much, and a lot of these things are probably really basic to some of you. But for me, it works. I genuinely look forward to breakfast now, and it is actually motivating to get me out of bed and get moving. A lot of the things on this list also allow me to do something fun before I get started on all the things I “have” to do, instead of feeling like I never get to do them at all.

3. PUT YOUR ALARM CLOCK OUT OF REACH

Doing this ensures that you have to get up if you want to turn off the alarm. No more reaching for your bedside table without even opening your eyes and hitting the snooze button on auto-pilot. Oh no, my friend, those days are over! Make sure the alarm you set is a loud and annoying one, too, so that you want to turn it off as soon as possible. And here is the really important part: do not get back in bed. Not under any circumstances. I mean it, don’t fall into that trap! Once you’re out, that’s it. I don’t care how warm and comfortable your comforter is, or how inviting your pillow looks – you gotta commit. Don’t get into the habit of getting out of bed to press the snooze button and then just jumping back in for those nine minutes; it’s not worth it. I mean, once you’ve gotten up to turn off your alarm, that’s it – you’ve already done the thing you committed to, so why would you want to undo that effort? You’re only hurting yourself, even though it might (temporarily) feel good to crawl back into bed. Not only will you probably feel bad about abandoning your goal to start getting up earlier, but you’ll also feel a lot more sluggish throughout the rest of your day.

4. NO ELECTRONICS IN THE BEDROOM

We all know that it’s a bad idea to look at any type of screen right before you have to go to sleep, but we also know how hard that is – especially with how reliant we are on things like social media or Netflix for our entertainment at the end of a long day. However, it really does help you get to sleep if you allow your brain some time to wind down before you get into bed. I’ve found that a good way to combat that urge to watch ‘just one more episode’ or mindlessly scroll through your Instagram feed is to just leave all your electronics at the door. Yes, this also means you can’t spend your day working on your blog from bed. The whole point of this post is to help you get out of bed, though, so that shouldn’t be an issue anymore anyway! Apart from giving you better sleep, this rule also ensures that you can’t waste time in bed scrolling through your phone as soon as you open your eyes. This probably does mean you’ll have to invest in an actual alarm clock, as I know a lot of people just use their phone nowadays (I used to, too) – but, honestly, it’s not that expensive and if you’re committed to getting up early, it’s definitely worth the minor investment.

5. DRINK A TALL GLASS OF WATER FIRST THING

I don’t know about you, but when I wake up I usually feel more than a little thirsty. Not very surprising, I’d say, after having slept for about eight hours and – obviously – not having drank anything during that time. Drinking a tall glass of water almost as soon as I open my eyes helps me feel more awake; it gives me that little burst of energy I need to get started. It’s also become almost like a barrier to stop me from getting back in bed: once I’ve downed that glass of water, there’s no turning back.

And that’s pretty much it; these are the tools I use to motivate myself and get up early. I hope these are of use to you (or at the very least, some), and if you try any of them out – do let me know how it turned out!

Bonus tip: stretch. This is one I actually picked up from my SO, and I’m pretty sure it’s a tip he picked up from his granddad. I must admit it feels a little bit strange at first, and it definitely looks funny (I’ve spent many a morning just laughing in bed while I watched him do some star jumps around the bedroom), but it does actually help. Just getting your body moving as soon as you get up is great to get all the blood flowing again, and you’ll immediately feel energised and ready to tackle the day. But don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be as energetic as star jumps – a gentle stretch of the body will already make a big difference.
